Why “Career Dad” Isn’t a Thing—and Why we Should Change That

The term “career mum” gets thrown around a lot these days to describe women who are smashing it at work while raising kids. Fair enough, but it does make you wonder—why don’t we ever hear about “career dads”?

It says a lot about how society sees men and women. Fathers are just assumed to be career-focused, while mums are expected to juggle work and the lion’s share of parenting, 70% according to studies. That’s not exactly helping us get to gender equality, is it?

What’s the Deal with This Imbalance?

For ages, men were seen as the breadwinners and women as the caregivers. Sure, times have changed, but not completely. The way we talk—or don’t talk—about these things keeps those old ideas alive.

Think about it: if you called someone a “career dad,” people might laugh. Why? Because it’s just assumed that dads have careers. Meanwhile, if a mum is ambitious at work, she’s often put under a microscope. How does she manage? Is she neglecting her kids? Honestly, it’s exhausting.

This double standard puts a huge amount of pressure on women. They’re expected to do it all and do it perfectly. No wonder so many end up burnt out or feeling like they have to put their career dreams on hold. And it’s not doing men any favours either. They miss out on the joys and challenges of being hands-on dads.

Why Men Need to Step Up

If we really want equality, it’s not just about pushing women to aim higher. Men need to roll up their sleeves and take on more parenting duties. When dads take on their fair share, it gives mums the breathing room to thrive in their careers.

Look at places like Sweden and Iceland. They’ve got generous parental leave that encourages dads to take time off. And guess what? Women in these countries are way more likely to go back to work after having kids, and the dads love being more involved at home. Win-win, right?

Compare that to countries where parental leave is all about the mums. It just reinforces the idea that childcare is “a woman’s job,” making it even harder for women to get ahead at work.

Changing the Conversation

We need to rethink the way we talk about this stuff. Instead of putting mums on a pedestal as “career mums,” let’s just normalise the idea that both parents can be all in at work and at home. How about calling everyone “working parents” or ’career parents’ instead of singling out mums?

Employers have a big part to play too. Flexible working, affordable childcare, and parental leave policies that encourage dads to get involved are game changers. If companies make it normal for men to take time off for their kids, it breaks the stigma and helps everyone out.

More Than Just Work

When dads get stuck into parenting, the benefits go way beyond gender equality at work. Kids grow up seeing both parents as equally involved, which challenges those old-school gender roles. Families bond more, and dads often say they’re happier when they’re hands-on at home. Everyone wins.

Let’s Make It Happen

It’s time to ditch the stereotypes and rethink what it means to be a working parent. Men should feel just as comfortable taking parental leave as women, and women shouldn’t have to choose between their careers and being a mum.

Real equality means sharing the load at home and at work. Let’s push for policies and attitudes that make that possible. And maybe one day, we’ll laugh at the idea of needing terms like “career mum” because it’ll just be normal for everyone to juggle both worlds.
