Disappointments, Dogs, and Walking in the Rain

Something didn’t go my way yesterday and I was pissed off. So what did I do? I grabbed the dogs and headed out for a 5K walk in the rain! When I came back, I was ready to take on the world again. Such GROWTH!

Indulge me here while I describe the many points of growth in the above paragraph.

Point 1

Years ago, I used to be one of those people whose mood was set by the weather. I would wake up, look out of the window and decide how I was going to feel for the rest of the day because it was overcast. I live in England so that meant I spent most of the autumn, winter, and some spring and even summer months in a bad mood. Looking back now, it was an insane way to set my moods but I didn’t know any better.

I gave my power away to the weather. So for me now, just not letting the weather stop me from heading out is a triumph and I have my dogs to thank for that. They simply don’t care what the weather is doing, they want to go and enjoy the outdoors and they will hound me and follow me from room to room until I take them out.

Point 2

Now, I can be found roaming in all weathers and I particularly enjoy going out in the rain. It gives me a chance to jump into muddy puddles and feel like a child again. Who knew! The growth here is that I can access good feelings regardless of what is going on.

Point 3

Previously, when things didn’t go my way, I would go into self-pity and tell myself all these stories of how UNLUCKY I was. For those of you that have watched my TEDx talk, I explained about my ‘bad head’ so I will not go into it here again but needless to say, I have got history. But, this is what I know now, who doesn’t? Everyone has got history. If you are alive, you have got some story or other about the curved ball that life threw you at some point or other. So what gave me the right to build a shrine to my bad luck? Absolutely nothing. Bad stuff happens and not just to me.

So the point of the growth here for me was rather than doing the ‘woe is me’, I don’t do that anymore. I head out into the rain and suck the juices out of life.

Life is a series of problem-solving episodes, but is also filled with moments of magic, joy, connection, bliss you name it. Wherever you are today, whatever you are up to, get out from under your problems and look for the magic, I promise you, it is there.
