Let’s get one thing straight: without parents, society simply doesn’t function. Full stop. Forget about AI, forget about innovation, forget about your favourite oat latte barista, if parents weren’t putting in the hard yards every single day, there’d be no “next generation” to fill offices, hospitals, classrooms or even the pubs on Friday night.

And yet, for all their sacrifices, parents are often treated like an afterthought.

The Real Cost of Parenting

Parenting isn’t just about bedtime stories and Instagrammable family holidays. It’s a relentless, messy, often thankless job that demands sacrifice on every front.

  • Wellbeing: Parents regularly put themselves last. That Pilates class? Cancelled because someone had a school project due. That early night? Interrupted by a teething baby or a teenager who “just wants to talk” at 11.45pm the end of their world!

  • Careers: Let’s not pretend otherwise. Many careers stall the moment kids arrive. Parents, especially mothers, often have to step off the corporate treadmill, take a detour, or work twice as hard just to prove they’re still “committed.”

  • Finances: Kids aren’t just expensive, they’re basically walking direct debits. From nursery fees that rival mortgage payments to school trips that appear out of nowhere, parents are constantly haemorrhaging money.

  • Social life: Remember when Friday nights meant cocktails and dancing? Parents often trade that for CBeebies marathons and collapsing on the sofa by 9pm.

  • Physical health (for mothers): Pregnancy and childbirth can leave lifelong changes. And yet women are expected to “bounce back” like nothing happened. Some women are never able to go on a trampoline again!

This isn’t a small sacrifice, it’s civilisation’s unpaid insurance policy.

The Inconvenient Truth Society Ignores

Here’s the brutal reality: the next generation is the workforce of tomorrow. They’re the doctors who’ll treat us, the bin men who will keep our streets clean, the carers who’ll look after us, the scientists who’ll make sure we don’t cook the planet, and, let’s not forget, the taxpayers who’ll fund our pensions.

So when parents put themselves through the wringer to raise decent, capable human beings, they’re not just doing it for their family. They’re doing it for all of us.

And yet society acts like it’s a “personal lifestyle choice.” As if parents woke up one day and thought, “You know what? I’d like to torpedo my career progression, drain my bank account, and lose sleep for the next 18 years for fun.”

No. Parenting isn’t just personal, it’s public service. I don’t need you to agree with me, it is a fact.

Why Society Owes Parents

If we were smart, we’d treat parents as national treasures. After all, if there were no children, there’d be no economy. No future. No one to pay for that hip replacement you’ll need in twenty years.

Parents deserve more than a patronising pat on the head or an annual “Mother’s Day” brunch. They deserve:

  • Workplaces that support, not sideline. Flexibility, parental leave that isn’t career suicide, and genuine respect for the fact that raising humans is harder than hitting quarterly targets.

  • Healthcare that recognises parenting’s toll. Both physical and mental. Stop underfunding maternal health. Stop ignoring paternal postnatal depression.

  • Economic recognition. Childcare that doesn’t cost the same as university tuition. Tax policies that reflect the reality of raising the workforce of tomorrow. I still can’t believe that childcare costs are not tax deductible.

Because here’s the kicker: if society fails parents, it fails itself.

Reframing the Narrative

We love to glorify entrepreneurs who “sacrifice it all” for their businesses. We applaud athletes who give up normal life to train for glory. But parents? They quietly sacrifice their wellbeing, careers, finances, and social lives for decades, and society shrugs.

It’s time to flip that script.

Every parent you see juggling work calls while organising a dentist appointment for their child is literally holding up the scaffolding of society. Every mum dragging herself to work after three hours of broken sleep is investing in the economy. Every dad turning down a promotion because the travel would wreck family life is subsidising the future stability of our communities.

Final Thought

Parents aren’t just raising children. They’re raising the very people who will keep this whole show on the road.

So next time you hear someone dismiss parenting as a “personal choice,” remind them that their pension, their healthcare, and their comfortable retirement all depend on today’s parents slogging it out in the trenches.

Society doesn’t just owe parents gratitude. It owes them a duty of care.

Because without parents, there is no future. Literally.
